Civil Affairs Operations Manager

95th Civil Affairs Brigade (Airborne)

Fort Bragg, North Carolina

July 2007 - November 2014

The mission of the United States Army remains constant. To deploy, fight and win our nation's wars by providing ready, prompt, and sustained land dominance by Army forces across the full spectrum of conflict as part of the joint force.

My duties in the Army evolved over the years. I entered the Army with the rank of Private and ascended to Staff Sergeant in six short years. In the early years, I was assigned to conventional units. During this stage of my military career, I learned how the organization is designed to support warfighters. However, when I joined the Special Operations Communities, I fully understood why the United States Army is considered the most professional and elite fighting force on the planet. I completed a year-long selection process to join the Civil Affairs Branch of Special Operations.

As a Civil Affairs Operations Manager, I managed five Civil Affairs Teams conducting operations in 10 African Countries. I was responsible for reviewing and reporting on all operational and mission planning matters. Communicated the Special Operation Command Africa's goals and provided specific guidance to teams to meet Department of Defense objectives and support  the United States Embassy's Chief of Mission programs and functions in host countries. I analyzed operational data and made recommendations to Civil Affairs Teams to improve results in mutually beneficial solutions for Special Operations Forces, United States Embassy Country Teams, and host nation Partners. These actions extended the reach of the United States Embassies in select countries and providing United States Forces access to contested areas.

As a Civil Affairs Team Sergeant, I served in a leadership role during continuity efforts to resolve conflicts and disagreements while providing foreign humanitarian, military, and civil administration assistance in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Conducted over 95 joint service missions in an austere environment over 9 months. To meet the ground commander's intent. I ensured that my team's tactical actions aligned with the overarching strategic objectives of the United States Army Special Operations Command-Afghanistan. Earning a Bronze Star for actions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan.
